What is POP and POS?

POS stands for point of sale and POP stands for point of purchase. They refer to the same area of the store and the difference between the two terms is largely contextual as we explain below.

What does POS stand for in marketing?

In marketing, POS advertising is found all around checkout areas or counters – anywhere you’ll find the till. The purpose of POS advertising? To make the customer buy more than they intended to when they entered the shop.

What does POS mean in advertising?

While POS means point of sale many retailers and marketers use the term less literally to describe any print advertising that will be seen by customers as they travel through the store. So POS is found in strategic locations throughout the store as well as at the checkouts. Today, POS and in-store advertising often mean the same thing.

What does POP mean in retail?

Retailers often use “point of purchase” when referring to a part of the store chosen for product placement because all customers pass through it. Confectionery is a common example. For many years chocolate and sweets were commonly displayed near tills in shops and supermarkets although the practice is frowned upon today because of the pressure it puts on parents. While POS usually refers to advertising and marketing products, POP is more commonly used by retailers to describe the location. To put it another way, point of sale advertising is often located at the point of purchase.
